The hoard is believed to be part of a massive amount of treasure stolen by a Japanese general in World War Two. For decades, treasure hunters have searched for riches rumoured abandoned by retreating Japanese forces at the end of World War II. Now their quest seems to have been vindicated - with the discovery of the supposed Yamashita treasure. According to financial experts, the two-foot, bell-shaped lump of platinum - a metal more valuable than gold - would bring about 26 (m) million dollars on international markets. Tomoyuki Yamashita was the commander of Japanese forces in the Philippines towards the end of World War Two. He was rumoured to ha...

Welcome to the Investors Trading Academy talking glossary of financial terms and events. Our word of the day is “Palladium”. Palladium is an important component in electronics, and is used in many new technologies such as fuel cells. As a commodity, it has drawn the attention of investors because it is not easily substituted, and is an important component of catalytic converters. Palladium, platinum, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium and osmium form a group of elements referred to as the platinum group metals. It is a metal used in many types of manufacturing processes and is found in electronics and industrial products. Palladium is an element found in the periodic table (atomic number 46), and is considered to be rare. The majority of the world's supply comes from mines located in the United States, Russia, South Africa and Canada. More than half the annual global demand of about 10 million ounces for palladium is from the automobile sector, while a quarter is used in other industries and in dentistry. Physically backed exchange-traded funds account for some demand, and about 4% of demand comes from jewelry. Car sales in China, the world's biggest auto market, are expected to grow by 11% this year to reach 24 million units out of the global total of 88.5 million, according to industry consultancy Frost & Sullivan. It expects U.S. sales to climb about 4% to almost 16 million. Barclay’s analysts say the Chinese government's plans to phase out 6 million old and environmentally unfriendly vehicles will create demand for 1.5 million passenger cars this year, which would further support the price of palladium. Palladium is also used in cars powered by natural gas, which is a growing niche offering in emerging markets such as India. Brazil, India and Russia are expected to experience robust auto-sales growth this year. India car sales in 2014 are expected to rise 10% to 3.2 million units. What is PALLADIUM? What does PALLADIUM mean? PALLADIUM meaning - PALLADIUM pronunciation - PALLADIUM definition - PALLADIUM explanation - How to pronounce PALLADIUM? Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Palladium is a chemical element with symbol Pd and atomic number 46. It is a rare and lustrous silvery-white metal discovered in 1803 by William Hyde Wollaston. He named it after the asteroid Pallas, which was itself named after the epithet of the Greek goddess Athena, acquired by her when she slew Pallas. Palladium, platinum, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium and osmium form a group of elements referred to as the platinum group metals (PGMs). These have similar chemical properties, but palladium has the lowest melting point and is the least dense of them. More than half the supply of palladium and its congener platinum is used in catalytic converters, which convert as much as 90% of the harmful gases in automobile exhaust (hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen dioxide) into less noxious substances (nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water vapor). Palladium is also used in electronics, dentistry, medicine, hydrogen purification, chemical applications, groundwater treatment, and jewelry. Palladium is a key component of fuel cells, which react hydrogen with oxygen to produce electricity, heat, and water. Ore deposits of palladium and other PGMs are rare. The most extensive deposits have been found in the norite belt of the Bushveld Igneous Complex covering the Transvaal Basin in South Africa, the Stillwater Complex in Montana, United States, the Sudbury Basin and Thunder Bay District of Ontario, Canada, and the Norilsk Complex in Russia. Recycling is also a source, mostly from scrapped catalytic converters. The numerous applications and limited supply sources result in considerable investment interest.Palladium belongs to group 10 in the periodic table, but the configuration in the outermost electron shells is atypical for group 10 (see also niobium (41), ruthenium (44), and rhodium (45)). Fewer electron shells are filled than the elements directly preceding it (a phenomenon unique to palladium). The valence shell has eighteen electrons – ten more than the eight found in the valence shells of the noble gases from neon onward. Palladium is a soft silver-white metal that resembles platinum. It is the least dense and has the lowest melting point of the platinum group metals. It is soft and ductile when annealed and is greatly increased in strength and hardness when cold-worked. Palladium dissolves slowly in concentrated nitric acid, in hot, concentrated sulfuric acid, and when finely ground, in hydrochloric acid. It dissolves readily at room temperature in aqua regia. Common oxidation states of palladium are 0, +1, +2 and +4. Relatively few compounds are known with palladium unambiguously in the +3 oxidation state, though such compounds have been proposed as intermediates in many palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. Palladium(VI) was first observed in 2002. With a 44% world share of palladium in 2007, Russia was the top producer, followed by South Africa with 40%. Canada with 6% and the U.S. with 5% are the other substantial producers of palladium. Palladium can be found as a free metal alloyed with gold and other platinum-group metals in placer deposits of the Ural Mountains, Australia, Ethiopia, North and South America. For the production of palladium, these deposits play only a minor role. The most important commercial sources are nickel-copper deposits found in the Sudbury Basin, Ontario, and the Norilsk–Talnakh deposits in Siberia. The other large deposit is the Merensky Reef platinum group metals deposit within the Bushveld Igneous Complex South Africa. The Stillwater igneous complex of Montana and the Roby zone ore body of the Lac des Îles igneous complex of Ontario are the two other sources of palladium in Canada and the United States. Palladium is found in the rare minerals cooperite and polarite. Palladium is also produced in nuclear fission reactors and can be extracted from spent nuclear fuel , though this source for palladium is not used. None of the existing nuclear reprocessing facilities are equipped to extract palladium from the high-level radioactive waste. The largest use of palladium today is in catalytic converters. Palladium is also used in jewelry, dentistry, watch making, blood sugar test strips, aircraft spark plugs, surgical instruments, and electrical contacts. Palladium is also used to make professional transverse (concert or classical) flutes. As a commodity, palladium bullion has ISO currency codes of XPD and 964. Palladium is one of only four metals to have such codes, the others being gold, silver and platinum. Because it absorbs hydrogen, palladium is a key component of the controversial cold fusion experiments that began in 1989.

Jason Burack of Wall St for Main St interviewed returning guest, David Jensen http://www.safehaven.com/author/198/david-jensen from Vancouver, BC. David is a mining executive, he runs a private mining company, he is a paid consultant for the mining industry, he frequently writes articles for Safe Haven and he's a follower of the Austrian School of Economics. During this in depth 40+ minute interview, Jason asks David about his 2 most recent articles for Safe Haven talking about the enormous spike in lease rates for physical palladium on the LBMA and how this is indicating physical shortages of palladium for industrial end users. 1) http://www.safehaven.com/article/44561/londons-palladium-markets-metal-shortage-structure-and-irregular-appearance 2) http://www.safehaven.com/article/44504/palladium-blows-the-whistle-on-the-london-metals-market Jason and David discuss the supply/demand fundamentals of palladium and platinum and Jason asks David if this physical palladium shortage could signal that silver is not too far off from a physical silver shortage on the LBMA? Next, Jason asks David about the state of the precious metals mining industry including producing miners and junior explorers. Can their raise capital to drill? Can producing miners cut anymore costs? Jason and David discuss this and also discuss sentiment after 6 years of a paper bear market in paper gold and silver prices. David says how the dislocation between the paper market and the physical market has continued to widen. David thinks there's many similarities between what is happening now in the global economy and what happened to the global economy during the 1920s prior to the 1929 Great Depression and Black Tuesday. Jason and David go back and forth discussing this for awhile. To wrap up the interview, David talks about his favorite junior gold explorer, Novo Resources http://www.novoresources.com/ and how and why people should research this company more as the company may have found a gold deposit similar in size to the famous South African gold mines in Western Australia. English/Nat Government officials in the Philippines have uncovered two tons of platinum worth around 26 (m)million US dollars. He was rumoured to have gathered a huge amount of treasure which was buried in 170 locations in the Philippines. Known as the "Tiger of Malaya", he was executed for war crimes in 1946 and treasure seekers have been looking ever since. Government agents seized the platinum Sunday from a villager in Lallo, 250 miles north-east of Manila. Apparently a Japanese treasure hunter found the platinum in 1993 in the sea off Cagayan province, and gave it to the villager for safekeeping. But on his return the villager refused to give it back - so the treasure hunter reported the find to the authorities who have now claimed the precious metal. There is no certainty the treasure is part of the Yamashita hoard but the agent in charge of the operation believes the rumours to be true. SOUNDBITE: Allegedly, the informant in the case was the a son of a Japanese general, during World War Two, and before his father died, he was informed that there were hidden treasures of this kind in the place and he was provided with the necessary map in locating the treasure. SUPER CAPTION: Vincento de Guzman, National Bureau of Investigation By law, such treasures are considered government property. But according to officials, the unfortunate finder will be given a substantial share of the proceeds from its sale. This trip to Jamaica was just amazing especially considering how amazing our resort was. We booked last minute but got a great deal. Here's our list of expenses as promised... 😊 comment below if you have any questions. -Flight and hotel: $2400 for both (all inclusive) and in the nicer side of the hotel (Grand Palladium lady Hamilton) the Jamaican side is more affordable and you still get access to everything. We booked through cheapcarribean.com because for some weird reason the price was $500 cheaper -Tipping money: $150 -Duns river falls: $120 for both -Atv tour with mineral spring pool $80 each -Airport to hotel shuttle 40 dollars each way (paid at the airport its cheaper) ****bring water shoes for these activities and we would recommend a yeti to have your alcoholic beverage stay cold longer. The resort has kayaks, paddle boards, and sailboats to rent free of charge. Snorkeling gear requires a 30 dollar deposit and definitely worth it in the area (lots of sea life). You also get to get on the floaties in the water for free. Very family friendly but also great for singles. Almost forgot, this hotel has a show every night which is very entertaining and it also has a lot of activities throughout the day. You will not be bored 😊
